What is a customs code?
A number that identifies your product to customs. The first six digits are the same worldwide — that is the HS code, agreed internationally. Every export or import entry must carry the right national code, not just the first six digits.
How many digits does my code need?
The United States files 10 digits, HTSUS, set by USITC / CBP. The first six of those are the international code used everywhere; the rest pin down the exact item for that country’s own tariff.
What happens if I use the wrong code?
The goods can be held while customs works them out again, and you pay storage while they sit. You can also face a demand for the tax you underpaid, with interest, a penalty under your country’s customs law, and loss of export refunds claimed under the wrong code. Mistakes often surface months after the shipment.
What rules decide the code?
Six official rules, applied strictly in order. The first goes by the wording of the code headings and the notes attached to them. The later ones cover unfinished goods, mixtures, sets, goods that fit two codes, and packaging. A code that does not follow them in order will not stand up.
